As much as AKontheGO Dad likes to think he’s all that with his beard, he’s got nothing on these guys. The World Beard and Moustache Championships are here in Anchorage this weekend, and let me tell you, you’ve never seen anything like it…

As the author of WBMC’s Participant Guide, I had the privelege of interviewing many of these hirsute competitors from all over the globe. Germany is particularly well-represented, as they ought to be; they invented the rules, and take this game very seriously.

The event kicks off with a number of activities pre-judging, but the actual competition begins at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Dena’ina Convention Center in downtown Anchorage. Folks, if you live anywhere near Anchorage, the WBMC is worth a look-see, if for no other reason than to see beards and moustaches that are coiffed, combed, and sprayed to emulate fascinating shapes. Really, there is a guy who works for hours to shape his beard to look like buildings. I am sure he’ll come up with something truly Alaskan for our event.

The Southcentral Beard and Moustache Club, headed by two cool dudes named David Traver and Bob Gengler, spent hundreds of hours working on bringing the World’s to Anchorage. While I am the first to admit looking at other guys’ facial hair was not exactly something I had thought about before, I have been caught up in the obvious excitement as competitors begin to arrive.

Check out the Web site of the Club, where a complete schedule of events and listing of competitors may make you want to change plans for the weekend.

AKontheGO fam will be there; plus, there’s a wicked good band from Australia called (of course) The Beards that will play Friday and Saturday nights.
