Make-A-Wish Alaska, AKontheGO, and Steam Dot Coffee Team Up for Kids

Wish Kid Hannah and I at Iditarod start, 2013.

Make-A-Wish is known for their big things. Bat Kid saved San Francisco, Hannah rode in an Iditarod musher’s sled, and Ellie became a princess. It’s easy to support big things, for they are bold and visible and easily recognized, which makes us feel good. But Make-A-Wish has a state full of children whose “Wish to Go” dreams need a whole lot of little things to make them successful, and that’s where we come in. WE – as in all of us.

Wish Kid + Sibs = Best. Trip. Ever.

It’s the #SeasonOfWishes, and AKontheGO is teaming up with Steam Dot Coffee Company and Make-A-Wish to help make it extra special for the 80+% of Wish Kids who experience travel as part of their magical experience. If you’ve ever followed in the footsteps of a wish, you already know that Wish Kids, their parents and siblings are treated as royalty from the moment they step onto the airplane, dog sled, boat, or automobile.

”] Each Wish Kid and sibling receive a Wish Pack full of good fun; stuff like iTunes gift cards, activity books, and beach towels. The Make-A-Wish office closet is stocked with all sorts of things, but as wishes become more popular, and more children are served, the closet becomes a little bare.

Can you help? Can you spare a few hours of thoughtful shopping for a Wish Kid’s family? I bet you can.

It's looking mighty bare, today, but come Friday, we want to see GIFTS under this tree!

Between Friday, November 29 and Sunday, December 15, AKontheGO and Steam Dot Coffee Company will be assisting with efforts to promote and build up the Wish Pack inventory with Make-A-Wish. Stop in to either Steam Dot store at O’Malley Center OR Sears Mall locations and pick up a tag. Do some shopping with your family, then return the gifts with the attached tag, and we’ll make sure a deserving Wish Kid receives a brand new Wish Pack.

Items needed are: Backpacks (themed or non-themed), small photo albums or autograph books w/ pens, toiletry cases with cool kid-themed stuff inside, beach towels, reading or activity books, travel games/arts and crafts for travel, beach items/toys (sunblock, chapstick, sand toys), gift cards for iTunes or Amazon. Be creative!

THAT’S how to spend a shopping day, yes?

Even my radio co-host is in on this party! Go Scott McMurren!

Questions? Does your office want to contribute (Tourism industry pros, I’m looking at Y.O.U.)? Call 907-258-9474 for info, or email me at

Will we see you Friday at Steam Dot? AK Kid and I will be at the Sears Mall location at 11 a.m. with Santa hats, jingle bells, and a whole lotta cheer. Let’s make these “little things” BIG!

Wish Kid Hannah and musher Ramey Smyth. Hannah traveled from Connecticut for her wish, and received an awesome Wish Pack.
