Juneau’s Silverbow Inn: Boutique style, family-friendly atmosphere

It’s one blustery, wet, and snowy weekend here in Juneau, Alaska, but AK Dad, Kid, and I are snuggled up tight in the Silverbow Inn, weather be darned. After a wild ride from Anchorage, when it seemed doubtful we’d even get here (and that’s another story altogether), settling in sounded awfully good.

The Silverbow is a favorite among Alaskans who travel to Juneau on a regular basis, and a newfound gem among visitors. Located downtown on Second Street, and within walking distance of the capitol building, waterfront, and restaurants, Silverbow Inn is attached to the equally popular Silverbow Bakery, an institution among Juneau-ites. Many a morning has been made easier with a fresh, hot bagel and cup of coffee; the very idea of staying here and enjoying the same over the course of  a few days was too good to resist.

Silverbow’s building dates back to 1914, but modern touches are evident, with a sleek exterior, gleaming fixtures, and European-style bedding in all 11 rooms. Our family room, located on the third floor, has one queen and two twin beds, full bath, and a nice corner view of narrow downtown Juneau.

Full breakfast awaits all guests for the duration of their stay, and the new wine and tapas bar merits a 10% discount. Need wifi? The entire property has blistering-fast connections, wonderful in a place where towering mountains often prevent consistent internet use.

Other thumbs-up attributes?

Rooftop jacuzzi tub and sauna

Non-smoking property

Kid-friendly chalkboard in the main room of the bakery

On bus line and within walking distance to museums, capitol building, and waterfront.

Luggage storage is available, and not a problem at all (great with crazy ferry and flight schedules in Alaska)

Every room receives a full binder of excellent visitor information; from self-guided tours to favorite restaurants, Silverbow’s owners clearly want guests to have a high-quality experience.

But it’s the atmosphere we love most of all. It’s a touch of urban chic with Alaskan hospitality. It’s a blending of fast-disappearing history with a realization that technology and convenience are valuable to consumers.

It’s just that cool.
