For a state with no major freeways and only a few ribbons of actual paved road, driving Alaska nonetheless packs quite a punch. For many travelers, that means renting a recreational vehicle (RV) and exploring the scenic byways of the Last Frontier on their own, and Great Alaskan Holidays in Anchorage is just the place to start.

Family travel gurus have long known the value of RV adventuring with kids. Unpacking once, moving at one’s own pace, and saving a good chunk of change by preparing meals instead of eating out; all provide a worthwhile week or two of family bonding, especially in Alaska, where options for camping out are diverse and plentiful.

Come May, Alaska’s roads, parking lots, and campgrounds become full with RVs; large ones, small ones, and many, many sporting the telltale Great Alaskan Holidays label on their backside. It’s comforting to know so many people trust this longtime Alaska company, with a stellar record for customer service and safety, and they’re gearing up for another summer of 49th state road trips.

Here are the details for 2015:

SIZE: Five sizes are available, ranging from 24 feet to 33 feet in length, and all 2014 or newer Winnebago models. Featuring the option of renting a slide-out RV model, some families will find the smaller RV suits them well, but many opt to go larger, making for a less crowded night and more room to spread out should weather or bugs force everyone indoors for any length of time.

RESERVATIONS: Great Alaskan Holidays is the only RV rental company in Alaska with real-time reservation services. That means your family can reserve an RV as soon as your dates and type of rental have been decided. Why is this important? RVs go fast up here, since everyone, it seems, wants to travel this way. Be safe rather than sorry and reserve asap. Also available are arrangements for transportation to or from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, with the option for staying overnight in your RV on the property if you arrive late at night. That’s a big deal up here, where the number of red-eye flights are definitely more common than other places.

SERVICE: Every single RV is 2014 or newer, and cleaned spic and span for your use. Before you drive off the property and head out for adventures, Great Alaskan Holidays has everyone sit down and watch a short orientation video so you’ll be sure you know where everything is located, and how it works now rather than later. Also included are pots, pans, cutlery, and bedding for the first two people in the party (additional bedding can be rented for a nominal fee) A television and DVD player are also included, and guests can opt to rent other amenities like outdoor chairs, a grill, or coffee maker for those daily comforts and camping trip memory-makers.

DEALS: Alaskans, try the “Odds and Ends Special” for last minute rental needs. Have company coming? See a nice stretch of weather ahead? Want to surprise Dad for Father’s Day weekend? If the RV is available, you can rent at a special rate. It’s a fun way to spontaneously explore your state in comfort.

KIDS: While Great Alaskan Holidays does not rent car seats or boosters for children, they do have tethering systems in all Winnebago rentals. As many of you might remember, our first RV rental experience with a toddler AK Kid led to a removal of couch cushions so his car seat could safely be placed in the coach. We love this, especially since Alaska law requires kids under 65lbs be placed in an approved seat. Seatbelts are available for every passenger, too, as per law.

Kids might also enjoy a bit of fishing, and the company can rent poles and all the good stuff you’ll need to catch a big one.

The short version is thus: Great Alaskan Holidays cares about renting RVs, but they care about your family more, and want you to have a safe, comfortable, and picture-perfect experience.
