Fun, Fun, and More Fun This Friday!

It's a great weekend to get little ones out on the slopes. Here we explore Hillberg on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson

Welcome to the long weekend, AKontheGO’ers! It’s here, it’s snowing, and it’ a great three days (four, if your kids are out of school today) for rollicking, rolling, outdoor fun. We’re just brimming with recreational bounty today, courtesy of the great folks who remember to send event and activity updates to our calendar email, togoak.com. Keep ’em coming, we rely upon you.

Special thanks, as always, to our Fun Friday sponsors, Alaska Center for Pediatrics, taking care of AK Fam and many other Alaskan kiddos since 1982.

Without further ado (AK Fam is headed to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson this morning for some tubing madness), here is the eagerly anticipated Fun Friday Calendar:

FRIDAY: Eagle River Nature Center is hosting a special In-Service Day Junior Naturalist program titled “Winter Scavenger Hike” for 12 pre-registered kiddos grades K-6 and their accompanying adult. Volunteer Jack Noll will lead a 2-3 mile hike/snowshoe over the river and through the woods to look for wintertime surprises. Today will be just perfect for snowshoes and snowflakes, so call right now to sign up! 694-2108. Free program, $5 parking for non-members.

ZooLights are back at the Alaska Zoo!!!! In case you missed their flashy bulbs and groovy music in December, you have one more chance now through March 5, every weekend beginning at 5 p.m. and running until 8 p.m. Temperatures are expected to be rather mild this weekend (from an Alaskan point of view, anyway), so it might be a good time to pack the sled and small ones and take a view at the wonderful efforts of Zoo staff. $6/$5 Zoo  members. (Hint: Go after 5 p.m., since it is still light out at that point).

Nature Rocks Homer, an incredible group of parents, kids, and outdoor educators tells us about the Great Backyard Bird Count going on all weekend. Some of the Chickadee-dee-dees are showing back up for spring, and the birding powers that be need everyone’s help to determine who is here, and in what sort of numbers. Visit the GBBC website for details on how your family can participate!

Friday Night Skating is going strong at Town Square Park tonight from 5-9 p.m., just right after a long day working or playing at home. Go on downtown between 5th and 6th Avenues and skate to some songs with the kids. Bring your own skates. Free.

SATURDAY: Military or DOD? Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson is hosting all sorts of outdoor fun at Hillberg Ski Area all weekend long. Open today through Monday 12-8 p.m., the Outdoor Rec keepers of fun will have everything from a Geocaching class to dog sled rides, to those uber-cool tubing hills and a free ski clinic on Monday. There’s something for everybody, so check the base website or Hillberg’s to see what’s up and when. Maybe we’ll see you there today!

Ice Skating is still going strong in Anchorage, and the Family Skate at Westchester is slated for Saturday afternoon from 1-3 p.m., complete with warming barrels, hot cocoa, and smiles. Bring your own skates. Free.

Eagle River Nature Center provides kids K-6 another chance for Junior Naturalist fun at 2 p.m. with a class all about “Tales Written in the Snow or Mud”. Learn how to “read” footprints like a real tracker and take a hike to see what is hopping, leaping, or walking through our fresh snowfall. Dress for weather. Free program, $5 parking for non-members.

Winter Family Fun Day is gonna be all that out at the Palmer Hayflats area near Reflections Lake, Mile 31.5 of the Glenn Hwy. Thanks to the Palmer Hay Flats organization, who keep us hiking, skiing, and recreation on the State Game Refuge, Saturday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. will be a mish mash of treats to eat, activities to try, and gear to borrow (skates, snowshoes, skis), all for Free. This event was previously scheduled for earlier this winter but we had some weather issues, but not this time! Have a blast. Call 357-8711 for info.

SUNDAY: Thinking about a winter camping trip? Have a boy scout troop interested in the mechanics of planning such an adventure? Head out to Eagle River Nature Center for a class by resident volunteer Jack Noll to learn all about the why’s and how’s of cold weather camping. 2 p.m., Free, $5 parking for non-members.

Family Day for skating takes off at Town Square Park Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Free cocoa, music, and fun for the whole family. Hey, after you skate, take a walk across the street to the State Trooper Museum and check out the Hudson Hornet. This little museum is one of AK Fam’s favs, and we love, love, to support our State Troopers as we take a step back in time to view the living history of Alaska’s toughest dudes and dudettes.

Don’t forget to sign up for upcoming Fur Rondy events, including the family friendly Frostbite Footrace and popular Ski 4 Kids events, both next Saturday. Catch up with AK Dad and Kid in the Footrace, then mosey on over to S4K, where your’s truly will be announcing the racers and all that jazz. See you then, and have a safe and snowy weekend o’ fun!
