AK Fam is going to be busy this weekend with our favorite fun activities. Some are outside, some are inside, but all are guaranteed to promote some learning and fun at the same time. Check out our Fun friday options, and remember, you can always post your own event on AKontheGO’s Event Calendar, found on the home page.
Better work on your best lullabye; the bears at the Alaska Zoo need you to help them fall asleep. Yep, it’s that time of year when all bears (except the polar bears) settle their brains for a long winter’s nap. The folks at the Alaska Zoo are throwing a “Hibernation Celebration” tomorrow from Noon to 4 p.m. The whole family will enjoy learning why our brown and black bears hibernate and our polar bears do not, and whether or not hibernation actually means “sleeping” the entire winter. It’s going to be fun.
You know those crunchy, yellow-colored leaves blanketing the lawns around town? Hey, why not get the kids outside and rake a bunch. Besides providing a “Tom Sawyer” moment for getting a job done, raking leaves, and jumping in them, remains a timeless activity any kid (or grownup) will enjoy. AK Kid loves filling up his wagon with the snappy foliage and then dumping his payload in different areas of the yard. We collect impressive leaves, too, and glue them to heavy paper for some crafty fall artwork, or press them between sheets of waxed paper, then iron gently for a personal placemat worthy of a Thanksgiving table.
Ahhh, we love autumn. Send us your best fall fun ideas; what do you do to welcome a favorite time of year!
