Fun Friday From a Cozy Hospital Waiting Room

AK Fam could use a weekend away at Alyeska Resort. Ahhhh, lovely. Photo courtesy Alyeska Resort.

Oy. It’s been a crazy few days around the AK Hacienda. Between AK Dad’s spontaneous headfirst dive into a pothole so big it should have a name, and AK Kid’s almost simultaneous strep throat, I’m about done in. Here it is, almost Friday morning and I already know I will not be in my fuzzy slippers and jammie pants, sipping my own coffee in front of a gorgeous view. No, I shall be at the Anchorage Day Surgery Center waiting for AK Dad to undergo a significant elbow reconstruction, the poor man.

So, we offer you a bit of goodness I wish our family was experiencing this weekend. The funky snowfall we had today didn’t amount to much, but it is enough to remind us that spring is within our grasp, for sure, but not all the way here. So let’s celebrate what is, eh?

Arctic Valley is hosting their annual Merry Marmot festival Saturday at the Arctic Valley Ski Area. Tubing, silly contests, kids races, food, and music round out this favorite among Anchorage-ites. Visit their website HERE for the schedule of events.

Alyeska Resort has a bunch o’ good last-minute deals for those who want a little family getaway from the early-spring blahs. Snowfall has been crazy good down in Girdwood, and skiing should be, too.

Eagle River Nature Center is prepping kids for springtime fun with their Junior Naturalist Program on Saturday at 2 p.m. “Is it Spring Yet?” will focus on signs of springtime, including a walk through the forest and some hula hoops. Yes, my friends, hula hoops. Free program, $5 for parking.

A fabulous AKontheGO’er sent us a link to the Daily Green, a super informative site about stuff you can do every day to promote outside play with your kids, even when the snow is melting beneath your feet. Check it out HERE.

Making plans to get outside this summer? Saddle up for the  Great Alaska Sportsman Show going on Saturday and Sunday at the Sullivan Arena. Just about every vendor relating to Alaska’s sporting life, from fishing to boating and hiking and hunting, is here. Kids can catch their own fish in the Big Pond, and don’t forget to take the Bear Aware Scavenger Hunt!

Have a great weekend.
