December arrived around here with four inches of fresh snow and a bright new outlook for Alaska’s holiday season. It was all exuberant joy this morning as we woke up to a regular blizzard outside our window, obstructing the view of nearby Chugach mountains. There was much rejoicing as we prepared for a work and school day.

But that’s not all…

AKontheGO’s Read On the Fly, our little project in operation since June at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, has gone big time, with some super-amazing news to release soon. December 17, 2016 to be exact. At 3 p.m.

We’re having a PARTY – a celebration of Alaska literacy, our wonderful partners, and a look into what is to come for 2017. So, in order to appropriately kick off the first few days of holiday break and Read On the Fly, here’s what we’re up to:

WHEN: Saturday, December 17, 2016, 3-6 p.m.

WHERE: Bear and Raven Adventure Theater, find directions HERE.

WHAT: A Read On the Fly Book Swap (you get to take books home and donate!) and Holiday Celebration!

WHY: To collect new or gently-used children’s books for Read On the Fly venues in Anchorage and around Alaska. And, of course, to have a whopping-great holiday party.

What will you and your kids find at the Bear and Raven?

  • Crafts, books, photo-dress-up opportunities at this amazing little venue. Oh, and the “Cloud Hopper” (pictured above) is so COOL.
  • A showing of the classic film, Elf, starring Will Farrell, starting at 4 p.m.
  • Hot chocolate, popcorn, and other yummy holiday-themed snacks appropriate for kids and grownups.
  • Giveaways from Alaskan Earth Mama, Alaska Toursaver, and other Alaska businesses.

Mostly, though, we’ll gather together to celebrate efforts to promote literacy for kids in Alaska. Now, and tomorrow.

Want to come? Tickets are $8 in advance, or $10 at the door. Only 60 tickets will be sold, so get yours today. They’ll go fast!
