Alaska Botanical Garden – Summer Camps for Kids!

Visit the beautiful Alaska Botanical Garden off Tudor and Campbell Airstrip roads. Erin Kirkland/AKontheGO

Don’t have plans for the youngsters this summer? Want the whole family to take an active interest in gardening, Alaska plants, and the environment? This just landed in my email inbox from the Alaska Botanical Garden.
Located just off Campbell Airstrip Road and Tudor Road in Anchorage, The Alaska Botanical Garden is an excellent place to spend the long summer break. Each week, campers age 6-12 will explore different science and art topics while exploring the 110 acres of native boreal forest of the garden. Campers will also go “behind the scenes” of the garden with tours of plant collections and the research facilities tucked away in a corner of the property. If your child loves being outdoors and digging in the dirt, then ABG summer camp is the place to be.
Sign up for one camp, two camps, or the entire summer! Each week offers unique hands-on lessons to keep kids exploring and learning about their natural world.

Growing Gardeners : July 9th-13th What better way to learn about gardening than inside of an Alaska-centered botanical garden? If your child has a green thumb than this is the week for them. Campers will create their own raised-bed and container gardens by studying the basics of garden and landscape design. They will learn the science behind soils, fertilizers, and compost to keep their plants happy and healthy for the entire growing season.
The Artful Gardener I and II: June 11th -15 and July 16th -20. There are endless creations we can glean from the natural world around. Come and join this camp for an entire week devoted to the arts. Campers will learn how to create art from nature with beautiful drawings, leaf molds and casts, photography, sun prints, and floral arranging. Gardens are the perfect setting to inspire the budding young artist.
The Young Botanist I and II: June 18th-22nd and July 23-27. Let your child become the expert on your next camping and hiking trip! Students will explore 110 acres of gardens and Boreal Forest learning to identify native plants, weeds, the traditional and medicinal use of plants, beneficial insects, local pollinators and critters living in nearby Campbell Creek. Let the inner naturalist in your child blossom during this intensive, hands-on week!
Garden Chefs I and II: June 25- 29 and July 30 – Aug 3. This camp is for the little chef in your life. Students will learn how to plant and care for a raised-bed vegetable garden while learning to prepare and cook with fresh produce. Each day campers will learn to make a healthy plant based snack, practice measuring ingredients, follow a recipe, and learn about key nutrients our bodies need. Come and explore the tasty side of plants.
Parents, The Alaska Botanical Garden also offers a wealth of other activities for you, too, with outdoor concerts, beer and wine events, and a special, family-centered Harvest Day at the end of the season. Check it all out, and consider a membership.
