Iditarod is Underway for 2010

dsc_09351Are these not two of the cutest mugs you’ve ever seen? They belong to Iditarod musher Zack Steer, our buddy from Sheep Mountain Lodge. The boys were “helping” their dad get ready for his umpteenth Iditarod start on Sunday at Willow Lake when I ran into them. It was a full weekend of sled-doggin’ fun for this AK Fam, and nothing else seemed to matter to our race-crazy kid until everything was over and the teams were on their way to Nome. In fact, AK Kid is still sleeping at this very moment, worn out from too much sledding, skiing, tree-fort-building, and dog-watching. Yours truly wishes she could do the same, frankly. However…

With Iditarod sled dogs on their way to Nome, and many parents now turning their attention to Spring Break this week, AKontheGo is determined to find oodles of fun for all moms and dads and kids who wish it were really spring. Today might be a chill-out one for us, but that doesn’t mean we won’t get out in our yard to add on to the still-huge sledding hill and fort out front, or shovel a hole in the back (who needs structured play, anyway?). Maybe we’ll throw a ball for the dog or take him for a walk up the Fort Richardson boundary trail. But we’ll get out. And you should, too.

Tomorrow, how about a trip to the Zoo with a group of friends? Nothing more fun than packing a snowy picnic lunch and eating it, all bundled up, under the picnic shelter on the facility grounds.

Got skis? Tomorrow night I’m taking a bunch of boys skiing at Hilltop. Tip: night skiing is cheaper and less crowded; I believe I’ve mentioned my disapproval of crowding the AK Mom. Why not take a ski break, either xc or alpine? Those Hillside trails are looking good, folks!

Who’s up for the Museum of Natural History? Give it a try this week: dig in a pit for bones, look at stuffed bears and wolves, check out some rocks, or read a book. Yeah, it’s cool.

There’s a few things going on around town, too, and we’ll post events later today for the rest of the week. Happy spring break and don’t forget to follow the Iditarod with your kids here. We’re rooting for Zack and Team Sheep Mountain. Now there’s an outdoors fam!
